Communication/Journalism 199-Research-based Writing: Cyberculture

In this writing class for second semester freshman, students will begin by reading several scholarly articles dealing with cyberculture. Articles will include cultural criticism, or qualitative or quanitative research. Topics may include identity formation in social networks, virtual worlds,and remix culture. Students then will work on developing a substantial 10-15 page research paper. Preparation for this paper includes writing a research proposal, annotated bibliography, literature review, and outline. Students will also study library research methods.

The class consists of lecture, in-class activites, and discussion.

Grades are determined by the research paper, as well as article summaries, other writing assignments, discussion, and an oral presentation of each student's research. There are no exams.

This course does not count towards the C/J major or minor.
